Business Administration Careers

Business Administration consists of behind the scene jobs that make businesses run successfully and ensure employees have all the necessary information and resources. Some common positions in the business sector are Administrative Assistants/Secretaries, Human Resources Assistants, and Marketing Assistants.

Administrative Assistant

Description: In charge of clerical and administrative duties. They help organize files, schedule meetings, answer the phones, and perform basic bookkeeping duties.
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $21.00, with an annual salary of $43,890.
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 1,640 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.

Human Resources Assistant

Description: In charge of compiling and keeping personnel records of employees, such as addresses, emails, and weekly earnings.
Pay: In San Jose, the average hourly wage begins at $23.76, with an annual salary of $49,420.
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 1,130 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.

Marketing Assistant

Description: In charge of supporting marketing managers with advertising campaigns, social media projects, and research of potential customers. 
Pay: In San Jose, the average hourly wage is currently $17.31, with an annual salary of $36,000.
Job Growth: It is estimated that there will be 2,370 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.

Child Development Careers 

Child Development consists of teaching and educating preschool to middle school students. This career is important because it is designed to promote the social and intellectual growth of children.

Child Development Educator

Description: Early Childhood Education involves educating preschool to middle school students.
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $17.18, with an annual salary of $35,730.

Community Service Careers 

Community Service professions focus on working with people and communities to identify resources, such as job placement, counseling, financial services, and any necessary support individuals may need.

Probation Officer

Description: In charge of making sure parolees and those on probation are following the rules of their probation.

Computer Support Careers

Computer Support professions use their technology expertise to help customers, provide technical assistance, and answer questions regarding computer software.

Description: Assists customers with questions regarding their computers, software installation, and any diagnostic problems.

Customer Service Careers

Customer Service is a career that opens many employment opportunities, such as sales, banking, hotel management, retail management, and even healthcare services. The skills learned in Customer Service can be used in almost all job roles and these skills open many doors for individuals new to the workforce.

Description: Provides information to customers, answers questions about products, responds to complaints from customers, and assists the general managers.

Healthcare – Administration Careers

Health Administration primarily focuses on the insurance/billing and scheduling side of healthcare. Examples of career paths in Health Administration are Healthcare Billing Specialists and Medical Secretaries.

Healthcare Billing Specialist

Description: In charge of maintaining a patient’s medical record and billing statements.
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $27.59, with an annual salary of $57,390.

Medical Secretary

Description: Schedule appointments, answer phone calls, and greet patients when they walk in the door.

Healthcare – Technology Careers

Healthcare Technology is focused primarily on operating technology used in hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare settings. The jobs consist of Radiology Technicians, Respiratory Therapists, or Sonography Technicians.

Radiology Technician

Description: In charge of operating machinery that performs X-Rays and Computed Tomography (CT) scans.
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $46.78, with an annual salary of $97,301.
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 110 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.

Respiratory Therapist

Description: Operates machines that assist patients with their breathing and issues with their lungs. 
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $44.52, with an annual salary of $92,610.

Sonography Technician

Description: Operates machinery that performs ultrasounds for pregnancies and internal organ injuries.
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $55.00 an hour, with an annual salary of $114,770. 
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 360 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years

Healthcare – Patient Focused Careers

In Patient Focused Careers, depending on the level of training, the job responsibilities may consist of assisting patients with using the restroom/bathing or measuring patient’s vital signs.  Examples of career paths in Patient Focused Careers are Medical Assistants, Certified Nursing Assistants, Licensed Vocational Nurses, or Registered Nurses. 

Certified Nursing Assistant

Description: Tasked with answering patient calls and helping patients with any physical activity they might not be able to handle on their own. 
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $15.49, with an annual salary of $35,713.
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 4,320 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.

Medical Assistant

Description: In charge of setting up patient rooms, performing office duties, and assisting the Registered Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses when needed. 
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $19.95, with an annual salary of $41,500.

Law Enforcement & Fire Protection Careers

Law Enforcement and Fire Protection are two careers that keep our society safe and out of harm’s way. Law Enforcement deals with street patrol and community safety, while Firefighters primarily focus on preventing/extinguishing fires. Both of these careers require specialized training through either a Police Academy or Fire Academy.

Police Officer

Description: Primarily focused on protecting their assigned communities, traffic control, and arresting/processing criminals.  
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $55.47, with an annual salary of $115,370.
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 3,790 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.

Firefighter

Description: Focus on fire prevention and responding to 911 situations, such as car crashes or other emergencies.
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $35.31, with an annual salary of $73,440.
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 1,130 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.

Skilled Trades Careers

Skilled Trades are careers where you can receive training through a California Apprentice Program. These trainings are free for people who are interested in receiving training through a trades program. Most apprentice programs are five years long and consist of both classroom training and hands-on training – which means individuals will be able to get paid while going to school.

Automotive Services

Description: Automotive Services consist mostly of working on cars, trucks, or any automotive vehicle. 
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $24.92, with an annual salary of $51,840.
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 3,650 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.

Construction & Building

Description: Construction and Building workers build roads, bridges, buildings, pipelines, and sidewalks. 
Pay: The average hourly wage in San Jose begins at $20.33, with an annual salary of $42,290.
Job Growth: It is projected that there will be 7,360 new job openings in San Jose over the next 10 years.
